Online Business Blueprint: Email Marketing Blunders

Just stumbled across a fantastic report by MarketingSherpa (passed on by my colleague, Chris Knight) of the biggest email marketing blunders.

Mistake #3. Lame ‘Welcome’ Messages

Okay, I don’t know about you but I pretty much expect a message when I register for an ezine.  Most of the time, I get the standard “Thanks for joining my mailing list. You’ll get the first issue soon.”  Your welcome message is the first exposure your prospect has to you & your message.  It better pop with your personal style.  And it’s also a great place to introduce your reader to other resources they might find useful, whether they’re yours or someone else’s.

Chris reminds us: I know why this happens: Most marketers who are trying to get an ezine off the ground are not fully clued in on the importance of the welcome message. It sets the tone and delivers a promise that your future emails better live up to.

MarketingSherpa recommended adding a coupon and other incentives in the welcome message to immediately increase member engagement. Great idea!
