Mini-Course: Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero’s Copywriting: Diet Your Words Down and Other Copywriting Tips
Just wanted to share a fantastic mini-course by Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero. I’ve taken the course on which this mini-course is based on and it’s fantastic. It changed the way I looked at my copy forever! If you don’t have your copy of Red Hot Copy to Woo Your Target Market, you should snag it now before the price goes up!
Diet Your Words Down and Other Copywriting Tips
The quickest way to write effective copy is to get rid of the unnecessary words. Your English teacher called them “qualifiers.” They’re useless descriptive words like “so, very, rather”. If it doesn’t add to the sentence lose it.
Don’t use several words when you can use just one. For example:
“the reason why is that” = “because”
“the question as to whether or not” = “whether or not”
“she is a girl who” = “she”
Drop the word “that.” You’d be surprised how many of those you can erase from your copy, giving it an even flow.
Use shorter words when possible. Instead of “attended” use “went.”
Sprinkle your copy with contractions. “Don’t” instead of “do not.” It sounds more conversational.
Read your copy out loud. I always find ways to make it better once I hear it.
Focus on clear and focused copy, not the buzzword of the moment. (Don’t know if you’re using the buzzword of the moment? Check out Buzzwhack http://www.buzzwhack.com/)
Use the present tense, not the past.
Use a P.S. for anything you really want read. Studies show people are more likely to read P.S. than any other part of the copy.
Note the six human motivators and make sure your copy addresses at least one: greed/gain, love, self-indulgence, self-preservation, pride or duty.
In the final lesson, I’m going to let you in on the cardinal rule of copywriting.
Warmly,
Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero
