Copywriting: What Is It?
People often ask me what copywriting is. First off, there’s a difference between copywriting (writing copy) and copyRIGHTing (the legal protection of intellectual property). I had a major “d’oh” moment when I realized I had identified myself all over my site as Red Hot “CopyRIGHTER.” Luckily I caught the error before it went live.
If you’re an entrepreneur, basically you’re also in marketing, right? Well the DNA of all of marketing is actually the words or the copy. Copy markets through language. Some places you might find copy are:
- Sales letters
- Ezines
- Blogs
- Emails
- Ebooks
- Press releases
- Advertorials
- Web site content
- Brochures
- Postcards
- Flyers
- Faxes
- Fundraising materials
- Power Point presentations
- Phone scripts
- And the list goes on!
Basically everywhere you use marketing needs powerful, attention-grabbing copy!
Luckily, when you’re writing copy, you get to have poetic license when it comes to stringing the words together. Most everything your English teacher taught you about never using run-on sentences or sentence fragments doesn’t hold water here. Go ahead and start a sentence with a conjunction like *and.* It’s all fine in the copywriter’s world. The key is to sound conversational. You’re establishing a relationship with your reader.
In Lesson Two, I’ll give you some tips to turn the heads of your target market.
Warmly,
Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero
